This module teaches the fundamentals and systems of piston aero engines – from operating principle, design and performance to monitoring, ground operation as well as installation and peripherals. The main focus is on understanding assemblies, modes of operation and typical influencing factors during operation.

- Fundamentals & efficiencies, 2-/4-stroke, petrol/diesel, engine displacement, compression, firing order
- Engine power: power calculation, influencing factors, mixture/leaning, spark advance
- Engine structure: crankcase/crankshaft, camshafts, cylinders/pistons, valve train, auxiliary units, reduction gearbox
- Fuel systems: Carburettor (icing/heating), injection, electronic control/FADEC
- Starting and ignition systems (magnetos, ignition leads, spark plugs, pre-heating)
- Intake/exhaust/cooling, turbocharger/supercharger charging (regulation/protection)
- Lubricants/fuels, lubrication systems, display/monitoring systems (RPM, CHT, oil, EGT, fuel, MAP etc.)
- Installation (firewall, cowling, mounts, lines/cables, controls), ground run/monitoring, preservation/storage
